Adult ADHD Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

adult adhdWhile the cause or causes of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are still unknown, it is certain that ADHD doesn’t suddenly manifest itself in adults.

If an adult is diagnosed with ADHD you can bet your bottom dollar the symptoms were there when that person was a child. For whatever reason the diagnosis may have been overlooked during younger years, but the disorder may be creating problems that need to be treated now that the individual has reached adulthood.

Adult ADHD manifests itself through a myriad of symptoms. Although these symptoms are common to the disorder, caution is advised when trying to “self diagnose” on the basis of these symptoms alone. They are not specific to ADHD alone and can, and often do, relate to other conditions as well.

Common symptoms in adults include, but are not limited to, anxiety, chronic forgetfulness or lateness, chronic boredom, impulsiveness, poor organizational skills, depression, addiction and/or substance abuse, mood swings, and tendency toward poor anger management. Again, those are not ALL the symptoms of adult ADHD nor are they proprietary to the disorder. However, if many of those symptoms are commonly exhibited then it might be a good idea to get a professional diagnosis.

Many people are reluctant to seek medical advice because they don’t want to be put on prescription medications. Once you have a diagnosis you can chose your preferred treatment. Unless your problems are severe enough to prevent you from functioning normally on a day to day basis you could seek alternative homeopathic treatments and behavior modification therapies.

The point is, there is no reason not to get the help you need when there is so much information available to you. Go pharmaceutical or go nutraceutical, the choice is yours. But don’t let your life get out of control. Help is out there. Take advantage of it.

Not All Dietary Fats Are Created Equal

dietary fatsYou have all read the food labels which are printed with big, black, bold lettering Fat Free. Well, fat free is good, sort of. But something that we really need to be aware of is that not all fats are created equal. There are good fats and there are bad fats. We actually NEED the good ones and if we try to cut ALL fat out of our diets we are leaving ourselves open to some major health risks.

Understand that some of the vitamins that are NECESSARY to good health are fat soluble vitamins. These vitamins are A, D, E and K. While the other water soluble vitamins are easily dissolved in fluids and carried throughout the system, fat soluble vitamins NEED fat in order to be absorbed through intestinal walls. If you have no dietary intake of fat, those nutrients are simply carried on through the digestive tract and eliminated without being utilized.

Fat is also a MAJOR source of energy for the body. The problem is that we need to be aware of which fats are good and which fats are bad. Try to avoid fats labeled as “saturated fats” or “trans fats.” This means fats such as butter, lard, solid shortening and certain oils should be avoided whenever possible. You CAN use oils such as olive, corn or canola oils.

Remember, while there is a lot of emphasis on fat-free diets, you really do need SOME fat in order to utilize nutrients that are ESSENTIAL to overall good health. You have heard that old saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” Well, don’t throw the good fats out with the bad.

Common Anxiety Disorders

anxietyEveryone suffers from anxiety at some point or the other. As a matter of fact, anxiety keeps us motivated and focused up to a certain extent. But, when irrational and extreme anxiety dominates all aspects of life, it becomes a crippling disorder. There are several types of anxiety disorders

This condition is marked by extreme anxiety and panic even when there is no trigger. People with this condition are always worried about health, money, family issues, work etc. Physical symptoms of the condition include nausea, headaches, muscle aches, trembling, sweating, and frequent trips to the bathroom.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
This term refers to repetitive behaviors and unwanted thoughts. People who have this condition have persistent unnecessary anxiety over something and resort to rituals to deal with it. For instance, some people tend to wash their hands over and over, others tend to arrange items in a particular fashion, and some tend to count everything they come across.

Panic Disorder
This is characterized by a sudden onset of fear accompanied by trembling, sweating, weakness, dizziness, chest pain etc. Panic attacks can happen anytime, anywhere without warning.

Post-Traumatic Stress disorder
People who have lived through a dangerous event often face this problem. They tend to feel anxious and panicky even when there is no need to do so.

Social Anxiety Disorder

How to Deal with Child Depression

childhood depressionDepression is not something confined to teenagers and adults. Even children are prone to depression. Events that disrupt the normalcy of life can cause turmoil in a child’s mind. For instance, death, divorce, family squabbles, physical or mental abuse etc can leave a child disturbed, sad and confused. Even positive events like the arrival of a new sibling or moving to a new city can make a child feel threatened, lonely and insecure.

The first step towards coping with depression is identifying the problem. Children who are depressed often show a change in character. Depressed children tend to express their emotional turmoil through anger outbursts or by withdrawing from just about everyone. They may also suffer eating and sleeping disorders.

To help your child cope with depression, be a good friend. Help them understand and vent their feelings and show them that you care and understand. The feeling of being understood and cared for will go a long way in giving a child the sense of security he craves. Understand the fact that something like the death of a pet may seem trivial to you but it means a lot to your child.

Encourage your child to take up hobbies or sports or anything that he is passionate about. Staying active and mingling with others is a great way to keep from getting depressed. If in spite of your efforts, your child still has difficulty coping, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.

Simple and effective therapy combined with support from family and friends will help children cope with depression and emerge stronger.

How Should Diabetics Lose Weight?

diabetesWeight management is essential in order to manage diabetes. Weight loss in diabetes can be intentional or non-intentional. Intentional weight loss is good because weight management will help regulate insulin levels. However, sudden and excessive weight loss in diabetics is indicative of other underlying problems and must be discussed with a doctor at the earliest.

Diabetic diets aim to reduce ones intake of carbohydrates. These low carbohydrate, high protein diets will help stabilize insulin levels to a great extent. Raw sugar and processed high carb, high sugar foods like biscuits, candy, soft drinks etc should be avoided altogether because the body tends to convert these into fat. On the other hand, more complex carbohydrates like that found in cereals, fruits, vegetables etc are not so harmful and are permitted in moderate amounts. Protein rich foods like lean meat, eggs, green salads, sprouts and pulses are an integral part of the diabetic diet. Decreasing the carbohydrate intake causes the body to resort to burning fat molecules to meet its energy requirements. Heart healthy fats like those found in vegetable oils, fish liver oil, poultry etc are permitted. Another important point to remember is that diabetics should exercise regularly.

Exercise should be a part of your routine for at least 5 days in a week. Walking is a great exercise for diabetics as is cycling, swimming etc. It is a good idea to get friends and family to join you so that you don’t quit.

Dietary modifications and a good exercise regimen are the best ways by which diabetics can lose weight and keep excess pounds at bay.

How to Detect a Heart Attack

heart attackA heart attack can strike anybody at anytime, regardless of age or gender. It is essential to be well aware of the symptoms of a heart attack because the first hour of an attack is the most crucial one and identifying the symptoms and seeking treatment can make a big difference.

A sudden intense pain in the chest is not necessarily an attack. It could be angina. Angina is triggered by exertion, stress or fear. The pain starts in the left side of the chest and spreads to the throat, neck, jaw, left shoulder and arm. Angina is usually relieved with rest and a dose of nitroglycerine. However, remember, angina pectoris could mean that you are at an increased risk of heart attacks.

A heart attack usually starts slowly with slight pain and discomfort, which most people tend to ignore. Some people tend to feel dizzy. The pain gradually becomes intense with pressure and discomfort in the chest. The pain radiates from the chest to the neck, jaw, shoulder and arm. A person who is having a heart attack may be sweaty and short of breath. Nausea and lightheadedness are also common symptoms of a heart attack.

Sometimes a heart attack is silent. This means that there is no chest pain. The person experiences atypical symptoms like nausea, heartburn, sweating and lightheadedness.

A person who is experiencing any of these symptoms needs to get immediate medical attention. A doctor will be able to examine the patient and run a series of tests including EGC or EKG to diagnose a heart attack.
